If you’re a homeowner, then you will need to have sufficient fire protection in your house, just in case a fire emergency breaks out. One way to protect yourself is to have smoke detectors installed. All homes need to have smoke detectors, and they can last you for many years. Unfortunately, there will come a time when these detectors need to be replaced, but how do you know when that time has come? Here are signs that will let you know to replace your smoke detectors.
Your Detectors Have Started Turning Yellow
One visual cue that a detector needs replacing is whenever the detector has started turning yellow. This happens gradually over time, and it’s a result of a material called bromine. Bromine makes a smoke detector turn yellow once it’s been exposed to factors such as UV light, oxygen, and heat. It will take quite a long time for the yellowing process to happen, so by the time your detector turns yellow, you should be just about ready to replace it with a new one.
Your Detector Chirps Constantly
Do you notice that your smoke detectors are always chirping? If so, this is an issue that needs addressing. A smoke detector is only supposed to go off in the event of a fire, but when you hear chirping like this, it means something is wrong with the detector.
Sometimes, you can resolve the issue simply by replacing the battery. If, however, you already replaced the batteries, but you still hear chirping, that means you’ll likely need to get the whole detector replaced.
They Don’t Respond While You’re Testing Them
You’ll want to test your smoke detectors monthly, and sometimes even more frequently than that. To do this, use the “test” button, and you’ll know if your smoke detectors are working. Detectors that are functioning properly should beep multiple times when being tested. If they don’t respond during testing, this is a sign that your detectors need to be replaced.
