Preventing Corrosion in Your Fire Sprinklers

Preventing Corrosion in Your Fire Sprinklers

Here are ways to prevent corrosion in your fire sprinklers.

Your fire sprinkler system is one of your best defenses whenever there’s a fire emergency. These systems can perform very well for a long time, as long as you take great care of them. A problem these systems can encounter, however, is corrosion, which can seriously damage your sprinklers and render them ineffective. It’s imperative to prevent corrosion whenever possible so that your fire sprinkler system can perform well in dire situations. Here are ways to prevent corrosion in your fire sprinklers.

Preventing Corrosion in Dry Pipe Systems

For dry pipe systems, corrosion can occur whenever water gets introduced into the pipes. Since there will typically be at least some amount of water present, keeping these pipes completely dry is but a pipe dream Once a dry pipe system gets tested or activated, water will travel throughout the pipes, and getting rid of all of this water proves to be a difficult task.

To prevent corrosion in these fire sprinklers, you can use a process known as nitrogen inerting. This process replaces oxygen with nitrogen within your fire sprinkler system. Without oxygen present, corrosion won’t be able to occur.

Preventing Corrosion in Wet Pipe Systems

For wet fire sprinkler systems, corrosion will happen whenever you bring oxygen into the system. Fortunately, like with dry sprinkler systems, you can use the same nitrogen inerting process to prevent corrosion from happening. It also helps to install some sort of air ventilation device to further minimize the likelihood of corrosion happening.

Preventing MIC Corrosion

MIC corrosion is another issue that some properties can experience. If this is a concern for you, there is a solution that you can consider. You could fill up your pipes with water that’s been treated. This prevents the growth of bacteria in your fire sprinkler system. You can use biocides in order to help treat MIC as well.
