How to Keep Fire Extinguishers in Good Condition

How to Keep Fire Extinguishers in Good Condition

Here are tips we have that will help you keep your fire extinguishers in top shape.

Every home or business is going to need functioning fire extinguishers, just in case a fire emergency were to break out. In order to keep them ready for fire emergencies, it’s important to properly maintain them, making sure they’re always in good condition and ready to be used when needed. Here are tips we have that will help you keep your fire extinguishers in top shape.

Perform External Inspections Every Month

These types of inspections can be done by non-certified employees. Once these inspections are done, there should be a written/digital record of the inspection. During external inspections, many different things are checked, such as:

  • Making sure fire extinguishers are visible
  • Confirming that the extinguishers are in the proper locations
  • Seeing that all extinguishers are easily accessible
  • Checking the pressure gauges to be sure they’re functional
  • Confirming that the fire extinguishers are filled

Set Up Internal inspections Depending on Your Fire Extinguisher’s Class

Fire extinguishers come in different classes. The class of your extinguisher affects how often you should perform internal examinations. Carbon dioxide extinguishers, as an example, will need testing every five years.

When getting an internal examination done, there are multiple procedures you’ll need to follow. You’ll have to discharge the suppressant, get your cylinder refilled with the necessary dry chemical and nitrogen or carbon dioxide, get your O-rings and valve stem replaced, and test your extinguisher to see if it has any leaks.

Keep All of Your Fire Extinguisher’s Service Records

You’ll want to keep records of every inspection your fire extinguishers receive. Keep track of the month and year in which each inspection takes place, as well as the name of the one who performed the inspection. By keeping records of previous fire extinguisher inspections, you’ll be more prepared for future servicing that your fire extinguishers may need.
