How House Fires Can Arise

Did you know that around one in every four fires in the United States happens in the home? On top of that, these house fires account for a large portion of fire-related deaths. To keep yourself safe against these types of fires, it’s important to know what causes them. This way, you can take preventative measures to protect yourself and anyone else in your home. Here are ways that house fires can develop.

Fires in the Kitchen

How House Fires Can Arise

Here are ways that house fires can develop.

The kitchen is the most common area for house fires to start. This makes sense, considering that cooking will often involve working with high temperatures. Fortunately, preventing house fires is very often an easy thing to do.

To start, keep constant watch over any kitchen appliances that are in use, like stoves and ovens. It only takes a few seconds for a kitchen fire to start, so ignoring frying or boiling foods for even a moment can have severe consequences.

You should also keep combustible items away from appliances that can be fire hazards. The fewer combustible items that are in danger, the less likely it’ll be for a fire to arise.

Fires in the Bedroom

Since people are asleep in their bedrooms, it creates a greater opportunity for house fires to grow. Sometimes, a fire will start due to overtaxed wiring, electric blankets, space heaters, and other electrical appliances. Many bedrooms also have carpeting, which can be flammable, and it will typically be one of the first things to catch fire.

Preventing these house fires requires you to be attentive to your electronics. You should address any wall outlets that don’t look safe, and replace any chargers or extension cords if they seem to be getting worn down. It’s also important not to overload any outlets that you have, and instead see if you can find other spots to plug appliances in, or keep them unplugged when you aren’t using them. Finally, in the case of space heaters, you want them a minimum of three feet away from any flammable items.
